Collingwood’s injury crisis has worsened, with mature-age recruit Joe Richards breaking a bone in his foot and ruckman Mason Cox sidelined for up to six weeks due to a knee injury.
Star midfielder Jordan De Goey will miss an additional three to four weeks after doctors found he suffered “an acute rectus abdominal tendon tear.” Initially out with a groin injury, further scans revealed the abdominal issue.
Richards sustained a cracked bone in his foot during the third quarter of Friday’s draw with Fremantle. The club initially feared a Lisfranc injury, but scans on Monday confirmed a crack in the fourth metatarsal, which might keep him out until rounds 16 or 17. However, a club source suggested the recovery might be shorter.
Despite these injuries, Collingwood, Richmond, and other clubs are dealing with extensive injury lists this season. The high-performance heads at some clubs are questioning whether more frequent games with shorter breaks are contributing to the injuries.
Cox’s concussion and knee injury from the same incident against Fremantle revealed a medial ligament injury, keeping him out for up to six weeks.
In some positive news, Jeremy Howe is cleared to return and might play in attack, given the number of injured forwards.
The Magpies need another second ruck and key forward due to Cox’s injury and Brody Mihocek’s three-week hamstring injury.
Will Hoskin-Elliott and Reef McInnes are a week away from returning.
Key defender Billy Frampton, who played as a defensive forward in last year’s premiership win, was moved to ruck and forward after Cox and Mihocek were sidelined on Friday and might assume a similar role against the Bulldogs this week. Ash Johnson and Nathan Kreuger will also be considered.
Dan McStay’s long-term injury further complicates the Magpies’ attack issues. The former Lions player will start match play at training after the round-15 bye.
Jack Bytel is ready to return after suffering a concussion in his first game for the club in the round-nine win over West Coast.
Dynamic small forward Jamie Elliott is dealing with a vascular issue and will miss at least one more game, possibly two to three matches. Similarly, Brownlow medallist onballer Tom Mitchell is still recovering from a plantar fasciitis injury, making him likely to miss at least one more match, if not more.
