Oshae Brissett will decline his $2.5 million option to become an unrestricted free agent, according to a tweet by Spotrac’s Keith Smith.
Brissett signed a two-year deal with the Celtics at the beginning of free agency last June. During the regular season, he played in 55 games, starting in one, and averaged 3.7 points and 2.9 rebounds in 11.5 minutes per game.
In the postseason, Brissett came off the bench in 10 games, averaging 1.6 points and 1.4 rebounds in 5.5 minutes per game. His most significant contribution came in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals against Indiana, where he grabbed three rebounds and three steals in 12 minutes.
The 6-foot-7 forward went undrafted in 2019 after two seasons at Syracuse. He initially signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Toronto Raptors, which was converted into a two-way deal for his rookie season.
Brissett was waived by the Raptors in December 2020 and later joined the Pacers in April 2021 on a couple of 10-day contracts. His performance with Indiana at the end of the 2020-21 season (averaging 10.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.0 blocks, and 0.9 steals on .483/.423/.769 shooting in 24 games) earned him a multiyear contract at the veteran’s minimum.
Although his stats declined in 2021-22, they were still respectable. However, his role diminished further in 2022-23, averaging 6.1 points and 3.4 rebounds while shooting 31% from three-point range in 65 games (16.7 minutes per game).
Brissett will have a busy summer searching for a new team, though he could potentially return to Boston. Additionally, he has been named to Team Canada’s preliminary Olympic roster.
