Sacramento Kings Shake Up Roster: Bold Moves, Trade Rumors, and Salary Cap Strategies to Reignite Playoff Hopes.

Kings Ready for Free Agency with Key Spending Tools

As free agency kicks off at 3 p.m. on Sunday, the Sacramento Kings are gearing up with crucial spending tools. The recent trade that sent Davion Mitchell, Sasha Vezenkov, and two second-round picks to the Toronto Raptors for Jalen McDaniels puzzled some fans. However, this move, which cleared over $13 million in salary, gives the Kings much-needed financial flexibility heading into free agency.

The salary cap for the 2024-25 season is projected at $141 million, with the first luxury tax threshold at $178.7 million and the second at $189.5 million. According to Spotrac, the Kings have $159.3 million in active cap allocations and $16.4 million in cap holds, placing them $34.7 million over the cap but $15.7 million below the first luxury tax apron and $26.5 million below the second apron. Initially expected to exceed the luxury tax threshold after Malik Monk’s new four-year, $78 million contract, the trade with Toronto allowed the Kings to get under the tax line. This move gives Sacramento access to the full $12.9 million non-taxpayer mid-level exception and the $4.7 million bi-annual exception.

While the Kings won’t be contenders for top-tier free agents like LeBron James, Paul George, Tyrese Maxey, DeMar DeRozan, James Harden, or Klay Thompson, they have the resources to address their roster needs. They also have the flexibility to take on salary if they revisit trade discussions for players like Washington Wizards forward Kyle Kuzma and New Jersey Nets forward Cameron Johnson.

The Kings explored several trade options involving the No. 13 pick in the NBA draft but ultimately chose to draft Providence guard Devin Carter. With hopes of upgrading their roster after missing the playoffs last season, the Kings aim to add another key rotation player to a core that includes De’Aaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis, Keegan Murray, and Malik Monk. They need more size, length, defense, and depth at the forward and center positions. The Kings also face decisions regarding their own free agents, including unrestricted free agents Alex Len and JaVale McGee, and restricted free agents Kessler Edwards, Jordan Ford, and Jalen Slawson, who could become unrestricted if the Kings don’t extend qualifying offers before free agency starts.
