Los Angeles Clippers’ All-Star Paul George has reportedly declined his player option for the 2024-25 NBA season, becoming a free agent.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, George intends to meet with the Clippers to discuss a new long-term contract, as well as with other teams that have the cap space to offer him a max deal.
While the Clippers and George had previously engaged in extension talks, they were unable to reach an agreement. The franchise remains committed to keeping George in Los Angeles, though the likelihood of retaining him has decreased. The Clippers can offer George the most money, up to $221 million over four years, but the previous negotiation breakdown suggests they may be unwilling to meet that amount.
One of the top potential suitors for George in free agency is the Philadelphia 76ers. With NBA MVP Joel Embiid and rising star Tyrese Maxey, adding a player of George’s caliber could transform the 76ers into one of the league’s elite teams. Another option is the Orlando Magic, who could benefit from a veteran star to complement their young talent.
Paul George is coming off a strong 2023-24 season, playing in 74 regular-season games—his most since 2018-19—while averaging 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game. He also shot a career-best 47.1% from the field and 41.3% from three-point range.
