Two weeks after leading the Boston Celtics to their 18th championship, star forward Jayson Tatum has reportedly signed a groundbreaking deal. According to TNT’s Chris Haynes, Tatum and the Celtics have agreed to a record-breaking five-year supermax extension worth $315 million, marking the largest contract in NBA history.
This deal signifies the Celtics’ trend of major investments, following Jaylen Brown’s $304 million supermax contract last year. Tatum, who had initially signed a five-year, $163 million extension with Boston in 2020, is now committed to the team until the 2029-30 season.
In the final year of his new contract, Tatum is slated to earn an unprecedented $71 million, setting a historic milestone as the first NBA player to exceed $70 million in a single season. During his seven-year tenure with the Celtics, Tatum has earned five All-Star selections and four All-NBA honors. Last season, he averaged 26.9 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, guiding Boston to a league-best 64–18 record and their first championship since 2008.
