The Los Angeles Lakers have maintained a relatively quiet offseason. After their unsuccessful pursuit of Klay Thompson, they’ve now set their sights on All-Star forward DeMar DeRozan. Despite initially being viewed as frontrunners for the Los Angeles native, they now face unexpected competition from an Eastern Conference contender.
According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Miami Heat are among the teams interested in signing the six-time All-Star. Reports indicate mutual interest between DeRozan and the Heat, but several other teams are also vying for the 34-year-old’s signature.
Miami’s interest in DeRozan comes as a surprise, considering their urgent need to rejuvenate their aging roster and return to contender status, despite a quiet offseason thus far. However, DeRozan’s fit with the Heat is questionable due to his profile as a non-shooter alongside Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo. While DeRozan is a durable player who could bolster Miami’s lineup, his offensive compatibility with Butler raises concerns.
Similarly, DeRozan’s fit with the Lakers isn’t seamless either, potentially exacerbating spacing issues and defensive vulnerabilities. Nevertheless, his scoring prowess and playmaking ability could provide a significant boost to the Lakers.
If the Lakers fail to secure DeRozan, their options for roster improvement could narrow considerably, potentially forcing them to pursue trades to enhance their team effectively.
