The Phillies announced on June 11 that J.T. Realmuto was placed on the injured list due to right knee pain. He underwent a successful right knee meniscectomy on June 12. Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski initially estimated Realmuto would be out for “about a month” following the procedure. Realmuto revealed that he first suffered the injury during a rainy game against the Giants in early May. Despite playing through the injury, the pain eventually necessitated surgery. Realmuto spent the All-Star break continuing his rehab in Clearwater and took batting practice before Friday’s game against the Pirates. He could potentially be activated during the Pirates series.
Zack Wheeler (Back Spasms)
Status: Won’t make next start until Twins series
Zack Wheeler left his July 9 start against the Dodgers early due to left lower back tightness. Despite dealing with back issues in his last two starts, the Phillies have managed to treat it and keep him on the mound. An MRI revealed no structural damage, but the Phillies are being cautious. Wheeler played catch from 120 feet on Friday in Pittsburgh and had a throwing session during his vacation in the Hamptons. A date for Wheeler and Ranger Suárez’s next starts will be provided on Saturday.
Ranger Suárez (Lower Back Spasms)
Status: Expected to make next start
Ranger Suárez was replaced on the All-Star Game roster by Max Fried due to lower back spasms. He did not report discomfort until after his Friday night start against the Oakland Athletics, where he allowed six runs over six innings. The Phillies don’t expect him to miss his next start, but he may pitch later in the series after the All-Star break. Suárez played catch from 120 feet and threw bullpen sessions during the break.
Taijuan Walker (Right Index Finger Inflammation)
Status: 15-day injured list
Taijuan Walker has inflammation and a blister on his right index finger. Michael Mercado was called up to take his spot on the 26-man roster. Walker is expected to arrive in Pittsburgh closer to first pitch on Friday after a flight cancellation and will throw a bullpen session on Saturday.
Spencer Turnbull (Right Lat Strain)
Status: 15-day injured list, out 6-8 weeks
Spencer Turnbull will be out until August due to a right lat strain. He left his June 26 start against the Detroit Tigers with right shoulder soreness, which turned out to be more serious than initially thought. Turnbull began playing catch on July 13, with plans to start a throwing program.
Luis Ortiz (Tommy John Surgery)
Status: 15-day injured list
Luis Ortiz underwent successful Tommy John surgery on July 11.
Michael Rucker (Right Hand Arterial Vasospasm)
Status:60-day injured list
Michael Rucker, who was transferred to the 60-day injured list on June 3, threw a bullpen session on May 14 and was set for another on May 17. He was at Citizens Bank Park on July 11, with plans to make a rehab appearance at Single-A Jersey Shore or Triple-A Lehigh Valley on July 13.
Andrew Painter (Tommy John Surgery)
Status: Minor league 60-day injured list
Top prospect Andrew Painter underwent Tommy John surgery on July 25, 2023. He is throwing 25-pitch bullpens twice a week, currently focusing on fastballs and changeups. Painter might pitch in simulated games before the end of the year but is not expected to play for an affiliate in 2024.
Dylan Covey (Right Shoulder Strain)
Status: 60-day injured list
Dylan Covey continues to deal with a shoulder strain and was backed off from throwing after also pulling a hamstring. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list on June 1 and is undergoing conditioning work. Covey was in Philadelphia for medical consultations on May 8 but returned to Clearwater on May 10.
