Nick Castellanos is almost certain to hit a home run on Sunday, assuming he’s in the lineup.
Former Cincinnati Reds and FOX Sports announcer Thom Brennaman was fired over four years ago for using a homophobic slur during a game between the Reds and Royals. Thinking his microphone was off, Brennaman referred to Kansas City as “one of the f– capitals of the world.”
Brennaman attempted to apologize a few innings later but was interrupted by Castellanos hitting a home run to left field. This incident turned into a meme, as Castellanos’ home runs often seem to coincide with notable events or tragedies.
Thom Brennaman is getting a second chance in broadcasting, away from Nick Castellanos. He will call college football games for the CW starting next season, according to The Athletic.
“There are no words to describe how grateful I am that they’re rolling the dice,” Brennaman told The Athletic. “They don’t have to do this.”
After being let go, Brennaman spent years trying to rebuild his reputation. He sought opportunities wherever he could, but aside from some winter baseball games and Ohio high school football during the COVID-19 pandemic, he struggled to find work.
Since his offensive comment in 2020, Brennaman has made efforts to connect with the gay community in Cincinnati and MLB. He has spoken with Cyd Zeigler, the founder of OutSports, and MLB’s Ambassador for Inclusion, Billy Beane, among others.
As reported by The Athletic, Brennaman “realized how that word can be associated with violence and hurt” and insists it was out of character for him to use the slur.
