The Baltimore Orioles and their third-round pick, USC outfielder Austin Overn, have agreed to a contract, according to MLB Pipeline.
This marks Baltimore’s second reported signing since the MLB Draft concluded last week. The Orioles also reportedly reached a deal with their compensatory pick, Virginia shortstop Griff O’Ferrall, over the weekend.
The Orioles have not officially announced either agreement.
Overn’s deal is reportedly worth $850,000, exceeding his slot value of $752,500. As the No. 97 overall selection, he was slotted for $752,500. Teams can vary their draft class spending within their bonus pool limit, which is $10.920 million for the Orioles this year.
A draft-eligible sophomore, Overn began his USC career on the football team before switching to baseball after the 2022 football season.
In 2023 with the Trojans, he earned Freshman All-American, All-Pac-12, and All-Pac-12 Defensive Team honors, posting a .314/.402/.530 slash line and leading the nation with 14 triples, setting a USC single-season record.
Last season, Overn was again named to the All-Pac-12 Defensive Team and earned All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention with a .270/.349/.461 slash line and five triples. He leaves USC second on the all-time triples list with 19.
O’Ferrall signed an under-slot deal with Baltimore for $2.7 million, below the $2.835 million slot value. He joins an organization already rich in middle infielders. O’Ferrall won the Brooks Wallace Award last season as the best shortstop in the country.
