Detroit Lions kicker Michael Badgley has suffered a severe leg injury and will miss the entire 2024 season, as confirmed by coach Dan Campbell on Friday.
According to NFL Network and ESPN, Badgley tore his hamstring during practice on Thursday. The Lions will place him on injured reserve.
“I feel terrible for Badgley,” Campbell said at training camp in Allen Park, Mich. “He worked incredibly hard to prepare for this season, had a great spring, and was ready for camp. It’s really tough.”
Campbell indicated that the Lions are likely to add another kicker to their roster. Badgley was signed to the practice squad in 2022 and spent time on the active roster over the past two seasons.
The Lions signed former United Football League kicker Jake Bates in June, who was expected to compete with Badgley for the starting position.
Badgley, 28, divided the 2022 season between the Lions and Chicago Bears and has also played for the Tennessee Titans, Indianapolis Colts, Washington Commanders, and Los Angeles Chargers.
Last year, Badgley made all four of his field goal attempts for the Lions and has an 82.4% success rate on field goals and a 96% accuracy on extra points throughout his 64 career games.
