Former 2017 first-round pick Gareon Conley has retired from the NFL following his release from the Dallas Cowboys. Conley, who was selected 24th overall by the Oakland Raiders in a surprising move, also had a stint with the Houston Texans during his career.
Conley’s time with the Raiders ended after two and a half seasons when he was traded to the Texans in a midseason deal. Unfortunately, injuries plagued his tenure in Houston. He spent some time in the XFL and UFL before attempting an NFL comeback. The Cowboys signed him in June, but Conley requested his release on Sunday, which the team granted.
Seeing a first-round pick fail to make an impact is always tough, especially for fans of the team that drafted him. Raiders fans, in particular, may feel the disappointment more acutely. Conley, a former Ohio State star, was well-supported by Buckeyes fans throughout his career. His decision to retire now allows the team more time to find a replacement rather than delaying the inevitable.
On the Cowboys’ depth chart, Conley would have been a third-string option at best. Given his salary, he likely anticipated his release and chose to retire now rather than prolong the process. By stepping away from his professional playing career, he can focus on his next venture, potentially in coaching.
The Cowboys’ defense is strong, featuring stars like edge rusher Micah Parsons and cornerbacks Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland. Conley’s retirement gives the team more time to evaluate potential replacements on the roster. Considering his performance and football knowledge, Conley might pursue a coaching career. Ohio State, his alma mater, often welcomes talented alumni into their coaching ranks.
