The Patriots faced a scare this weekend when head athletic trainer Jim Whalen noticed a bruise on the back of defensive tackle Christian Barmore‘s calf. Whalen insisted that Barmore get it checked out, leading to a diagnosis of blood clots. Now, Barmore is receiving treatment and focusing on his health, according to a statement from the Patriots.
Barmore, a former second-round pick from Alabama, had a slow start to his NFL career. In his rookie season, he played mainly as a rotational sub, starting only two games but logging significant playing time. He was primarily a run-stopper, recording 46 tackles. In his second year, his role increased slightly with three starts, but he was limited to 10 games due to a knee injury.
Last year, Barmore had a breakout season. He started six games but played more defensive snaps than any other lineman, achieving career highs in sacks (8.5), total tackles (64), tackles for loss (13), quarterback hits (16), pass deflections (6), and forced fumbles (1). Pro Football Focus ranked him as the eighth-best interior defender in the NFL, highlighting his exceptional pass-rushing abilities.
In recognition of his performance, the Patriots signed Barmore to a four-year extension worth up to $92 million, ensuring he would anchor their defensive line through the 2028 season.
However, his future is now uncertain following the blood clot diagnosis. The priority is Barmore’s health, not his return to the field. The undiagnosed blood clots could have had severe consequences for the young defender, who turns 25 today. Once his health is secured, he can think about football, but for now, his focus is solely on recovery.
