Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk of the San Francisco 49ers has been pushing for a significant contract extension over the past few months, and he may be close to leaving the team.
Reports indicate that the 49ers have a trade agreement lined up with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are also reportedly close to reaching a contract extension with Aiyuk.
As a result, the 49ers’ Super Bowl chances are in jeopardy, and former NFL player James Jones questioned on Fox Sports 1’s “Speak” what Aiyuk truly wants at this moment.
A week ago, San Francisco had trade agreements with the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots. Specifically, the deal with the Browns would have brought five-time Pro Bowl WR Amari Cooper and draft picks to the 49ers.
That trade could have preserved San Francisco’s Super Bowl hopes, but Aiyuk blocked both trades, even though New England reportedly offered him over $30 million annually.
This raises questions about whether money is his primary motivation.
Aiyuk led the Niners in receptions and receiving yards last season. If he is traded, the team’s performance might suffer unless they acquire a comparable wide receiver in return.
According to Dianna Russini, the Niners might involve a third team in their trade discussions with Pittsburgh to enhance their return, though such trades are usually complex due to the numerous factors involved.
