Yankees have no intention of re-signing these veterans in free agency

Don’t count on seeing Gleyber Torres or Anthony Rizzo back with the Yankees next season.

The Yankees have no plans to bring back either veteran as they enter free agency this offseason, according to Jack Curry of YES Network on Monday night’s Yankees Hot Stove.

This decision isn’t entirely unexpected, given the struggles both players have faced in recent years. Rizzo seemed like a potential candidate to return, but the Yankees opted not to exercise his $17 million club option for 2025 shortly after the World Series, instead paying a $6 million buyout.

With both Gleyber Torres and Anthony Rizzo likely headed elsewhere, the Yankees’ right side of the infield will look very different in 2025 and beyond.

Rizzo, 35, was acquired from the Cubs in 2021 as the Yankees sought a reliable first baseman. While he provided leadership and developed a close bond with team captain Aaron Judge, injuries hindered his production. Rizzo hasn’t been the same since suffering a head injury in May 2023, which led to post-concussion syndrome. His struggles continued into 2024, as he fractured his forearm and later broke two fingers in a hit-by-pitch incident. Over the last two years, he hit .237/.315/.358 with 20 home runs in 191 games.

Torres, once a top prospect and a breakout star in his early years with the Yankees, never fully recaptured his 2019 form. While he hit 38 home runs with an .871 OPS that year, his defensive struggles at second base (where he’s made more errors than any other player at the position since 2018) and inconsistent offense have been concerns. Torres did end his 2024 season strong, particularly as a leadoff hitter, and his performance in 2023 made him one of the Yankees’ better hitters. However, his .261/.332/.411 slash line and 15 home runs per year since 2020 highlight his steady decline.

The Yankees will need to get creative in filling these positions, especially with their potential pursuit of Juan Soto, which could limit their spending on other needs. First base is a priority, and if the team doesn’t pursue a free-agent like Christian Walker, they may explore trade options for a cost-effective solution. The team will be looking for a slugger who can also play solid defense. Internal options at first base include DJ LeMahieu (under contract for two more years at $15 million per season) and prospect Ben Rice.

At second base, the Yankees could turn to Jazz Chisholm Jr., who was acquired from the Marlins at the trade deadline and was primarily a middle infielder before playing third base for New York. That would open up a spot at third base, where the Yankees are high on prospect Caleb Durbin, a versatile infielder with an elite hit tool who could make an impact in the big leagues next season.
