Atlanta Braves – The Atlanta Braves have been linked to a wide array of free agents throughout the offseason, sparking plenty of speculation about potential additions. Despite this, the team has yet to make any significant moves in terms of bolstering their roster with major free-agent signings.
Atlanta’s key areas of need include a corner outfielder, a reliable late-inning bullpen arm, and a starting pitcher. While several options remain available, the Braves may need to act quickly to secure the right pieces before these opportunities are gone. One area where the Braves have historically not hesitated to invest is their bullpen, with general manager Alex Anthopoulos (AA) consistently adding high-quality relief pitchers, whether through free agency or trade. Notable additions in recent years include Will Smith, Raisel Iglesias, Aaron Bummer, and Joe Jiménez.
This offseason, the Braves have reportedly shown a strong interest in left-handed reliever Tanner Scott. Given the team’s need for a solid backend bullpen option—especially with the injury to Joe Jiménez and the departure of AJ Minter to free agency—Scott appears to be an ideal fit. Braves insider David O’Brien recently suggested that the team’s interest in Scott is very much genuine, moving beyond the realm of mere speculation. O’Brien revealed that the Braves have thoroughly vetted Scott’s medical history, a sign that they are seriously considering him as a potential acquisition.
However, O’Brien also pointed out that, as with most free agents, the situation will ultimately come down to contract negotiations. Scott, who has garnered significant attention from multiple teams, is expected to command a substantial deal. According to Fangraphs, the lefty could sign a four-year, $60 million contract, though that figure could be higher given the inflation of free-agent deals this offseason.
Despite the potential cost, Scott represents a valuable addition for any contending team. His impressive recent performance has made him one of the most sought-after relievers on the market. Over the past two seasons, Scott has posted a remarkable 2.04 ERA and a 2.53 FIP in 150 innings, including an outstanding 1.75 ERA in 2024. His strikeout rate is elite, though he struggles with his walk rate, which rose significantly from 5% in 2023 to 12.2% in 2024.
Adding Scott would significantly strengthen the Braves’ bullpen, potentially making it one of the best in the league. However, this move would likely push the team to look for more cost-effective solutions for their remaining needs, as the Braves have expressed a cautious approach toward the luxury tax, even though they’ve stated it’s not an immediate concern. Ultimately, if the Braves manage to sign Scott, it would be a major step in solidifying their pitching staff heading into the 2025 season.
