Jim Tressel, a beloved figure in Ohio State football history, has been appointed as Ohio’s new Lt. Governor by Governor Mike DeWine. Known for his leadership and preparation, Tressel’s tenure as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes was defined by his ability to elevate the program, most notably with his victory in a national championship and an impressive 9-1 record against Michigan. Despite a controversial exit due to the Tattogate scandal, which led to a vacated win against Michigan in 2010, Tressel’s legacy at Ohio State football remains strong.

After his time with Ohio State, Tressel served briefly as a consultant for the Indianapolis Colts before taking the role of president at Youngstown State University, a position he recently retired from. Now, Tressel steps into the political arena as Ohio’s Lt. Governor. His appointment follows the transition of former Lt. Governor John Husted to a Senate seat. Tressel will serve in this role for two years.

For Ohioans, Tressel’s move into politics isn’t a huge surprise. There have been rumors suggesting that he may run for Governor in 2026, and his current position could be seen as a stepping stone for such a bid. Known for his deep respect throughout the state, Tressel has had a significant impact both on Ohio State and at Youngstown State. His appointment also likely means a reduced role with the Buckeyes after his retirement, as he has been a key fundraiser for the school.

At 72, Tressel doesn’t show signs of slowing down, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him take his political career further, potentially running for Governor once his term as Lt. Governor concludes.
