Pete Alonso and the New York Mets officially finalized a two-year, $54 million deal on Wednesday, just as spring training kicked off in Florida with the first official workout for pitchers and catchers. The agreement was reached last week, contingent on a successful physical, and includes a $10 million signing bonus. Alonso, a four-time All-Star and one of the Mets’ most beloved players, will earn $20 million in 2025 and $24 million in 2026. He also has the option to opt out after the 2025 season to explore free agency.
In addition to Alonso’s deal, the Mets also re-signed injured reliever Drew Smith to a one-year contract with a club option for 2026. Smith is expected to miss the majority, if not all, of the upcoming season due to recovering from his second Tommy John surgery. However, he is anticipated to be ready for the 2026 season.

Mets owners Steve and Alex Cohen expressed their excitement over Alonso’s return, highlighting the first baseman’s importance to the team and his connection to the fanbase. Alonso, who turned 30 in December, spent more time than expected on the free-agent market, with other top first basemen like Christian Walker signing three-year contracts with Houston, and Paul Goldschmidt and Carlos Santana taking shorter deals elsewhere.
Alonso has been a central figure for New York Mets throughout his career, ranking third in franchise history with 226 home runs, trailing only David Wright and Darryl Strawberry. As the Mets gear up for the season ahead, bringing Alonso back provides a significant boost to their lineup and their ongoing efforts to remain competitive in the NL East.
