Rumors have been circulating about Spencer Leniu‘s alleged dissatisfaction at the Sydney Roosters, but both the club and Leniu’s management have firmly dismissed any speculation of him leaving the team early.

The initial gossip, reported by The Daily Telegraph, suggested that Leniu, just one year into his high-paying contract with the Roosters, was unhappy in Bondi and seeking an exit. However, the claims were quickly shut down. According to columnist Brent Read, he reached out to Leniu’s agent, who immediately rejected the rumors, confirming that they were not true. Additionally, other journalists contacted the Roosters directly, and the club also denied any such talk.

Leniu, a three-time premiership winner with Penrith, was one of the most significant signings for the Roosters ahead of the 2024 season. Despite this, the club’s pre-season performance has not been promising, and the Roosters suffered a heavy 48-10 defeat to Newcastle in a recent trial match. This has raised concerns about their potential for the upcoming season.

The Roosters have already lost several key players in the off-season, including Joseph Suaali’i, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Joseph Manu, Luke Keary, and Terrell May, which has left a gap in their roster. Their major signings have been relatively minimal, with Chad Townsend and rugby union convert Mark Nawaqanitawase joining the squad. Additionally, the club had initially secured the signing of David Fifita, but he later decided to remain with the Titans.

The situation has led to questions about whether the Roosters’ recruitment strategy is failing. Aaron Woods, commenting on Triple M, voiced concerns, noting that the Roosters haven’t been able to sign enough quality players, leaving them looking thin on experience in critical positions. This lack of depth was exposed during their trial loss to Newcastle.

Brent Read speculated that the Roosters may be holding onto salary cap space with the hope of luring Joey Manu back from rugby union. Reports suggest that Manu has faced difficulties adapting to rugby union, which could make him more inclined to return to league. Based on their performance in the trial, Read suggested the Roosters could certainly use his presence on the field.
