The Buckeyes are favored to win the College Football Playoff, and here’s why they have what it takes to claim the title.

Throughout the 2024 college football season, there has been much discussion about the increasing parity in the sport. A number of factors have contributed to this shift, such as power conference teams not performing as dominantly as in previous years, and lower-tier teams becoming more competitive. High-profile upsets by underdogs have further fueled the narrative of a season without a clear “dominant” team. However, despite this apparent chaos, Ohio State has quietly emerged as the true powerhouse that many had expected at the beginning of the season. Though they entered the College Football Playoff (CFP) as the eighth seed, the Buckeyes have proven themselves to be the most formidable contender, with a series of impressive victories, including blowout wins over Tennessee and Oregon.

While the concept of a “highly funded” roster may have raised questions earlier in the year, Ohio State‘s playoff performance has confirmed that their investment in talent has paid off handsomely. With the team now firing on all cylinders, there are several key factors that explain why the Buckeyes are primed to capture their ninth national championship.

First and foremost, Ohio State boasts the best player remaining in the playoff bracket. Freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith has been exceptional, tallying 13 receptions for 290 yards and four touchdowns in the first two rounds of the playoffs. His ability to make crucial plays on third downs and as a deep threat has made him a constant presence on the field. At 6’3″ and 215 pounds, Smith presents a mismatch for defenders, and even when he’s not catching passes, his impact is felt throughout the game.

Second, the Buckeyes’ offense is finally clicking after overcoming early-season challenges. The team has a new offensive coordinator, a fresh starting quarterback, and other changes in key positions, all of which contributed to some inconsistency in the offense. However, a more focused approach following their loss to Michigan, which highlighted several issues, has led to improved play. Offensive coordinator Chip Kelly took responsibility for the early struggles, and his efforts have paid off with 83 points scored in the first two playoff games. Quarterback Will Howard, who has shown remarkable comfort in recent weeks, has delivered some of his best performances, particularly in the victories over Tennessee and Oregon, where he completed 82.8% of his passes for over 300 yards in each game.

Finally, Ohio State’s defense has been one of the best in the nation all year. The Buckeyes have allowed more than 17 points in a game only once, and have been especially tough against elite opponents. A significant factor in their success is the leadership provided by a group of senior players who returned for one more season, many with the opportunity to enter the NFL Draft. This group, including players like Jack Sawyer, JT Tuimoloau, and Lathan Ransom, has brought an extra level of intensity to the defense, fueled by the desire for redemption after the loss to Michigan. Their leadership and veteran experience are proving invaluable as Ohio State aims to finish the season strong.

With an exceptional mix of talent, experience, and leadership, Ohio State is poised to go all the way and claim their ninth national title.
