Ken Hinkley Declares: “I Won’t Back Down”

Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley remains defiant after being booed by some Power fans during a devastating 79-point loss to Brisbane.

The Lions secured a historic victory with their highest-ever score against Port, winning 23.14 (152) to 10.13 (73) on Saturday by kicking twelve consecutive goals.

Hinkley faced criticism from sections of the crowd when he appeared on Adelaide Oval’s big screens and after the game.

“It’s not enjoyable. It’s just part of my job,” Hinkley said. “If you can’t handle it, you shouldn’t be in my position. I can handle it, but it’s not something I like.”

Brisbane coach Chris Fagan expressed disappointment over the treatment of Hinkley.

“For me, the only downside of winning today is that he was booed off the ground. I don’t like that,” Fagan said. “Coaching is tough … I support all coaches. His record at this club is remarkable and shouldn’t be judged on one game.”

Hinkley holds the record for coaching the most VFL/AFL games without reaching a grand final – 262 – with a winning percentage of 59.7.

Despite the Power’s slide to seventh place after a third consecutive loss, narrowly ahead of Brisbane, Hinkley remains positive.

Speaking about his young midfielders who struggled against Brisbane’s experienced players, Hinkley said: “I know they can trouble any team when they perform at their best. I won’t give up. I expect the team to improve.”
