Coach Craig McRae admits he may need to alter Jordan De Goey’s role as the Collingwood star contends with a groin injury, while Dan McStay might return against Hawthorn.
De Goey, 28, has been lacking his usual explosiveness due to ongoing groin soreness. He told the Seven Network he has been in an “uphill battle” with injuries, describing the groin pain as “debilitating in terms of power and stuff like that.”
McRae clarified that De Goey is not suffering from osteitis pubis but acknowledged he might need to play more forward.
“This is the reality for some of our players, and Jordy is one of them,” McRae said. “He’s been running in straight lines most of the week just to be able to play. It’s been a tough year for Jordy, dealing with his body and getting ready to perform despite minor niggles.”
“We need Jordy at his best. He got through training today, and ideally, he’ll perform at his best on Saturday. We’ll continue to put all our players in positions where they can make an impact, which might involve some evolution in Jordy’s game.”
McStay, 29, made a strong return from his ACL tear in the VFL over the weekend. With the Magpies needing a tall forward target, he could be quickly promoted.
“He pulled up really well from the VFL game, and we just need to discuss a few things before making a decision,” McRae said. “There’s a clear need for someone like Dan, so we just need to ensure everything is in order. He’s done a lot of work and looks fit and strong.”
McRae did not confirm if Mason Cox would return after recovering from a knee injury. Nathan Kreuger missed training due to gastro, and Jeremy Howe was also absent with a virus.
