Top 5 Free Agents the Lakers Can Still Sign

The Los Angeles Lakers have yet to make any significant acquisitions this offseason, aside from drafting Dalton Knecht and Bronny James in the 2024 NBA Draft. They aimed for a few free agents but came up short.

The Lakers can’t afford to enter the 2024-25 season with the same roster as last year. They need stronger role players around LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Otherwise, it’s hard to envision a different outcome than last year’s exit against the Denver Nuggets.

Fortunately, the Lakers still have opportunities to sign remaining free agents who would be a good fit for Los Angeles. With the market drying up, these players are likely to accept veteran minimum deals or team-friendly contracts. Given that the Lakers offer plenty of playing time and significant rotation roles, they stand a good chance of signing a few of these free agents. Let’s examine the options.

Tyus Jones

The 28-year-old point guard is arguably the best player remaining on the free agent market. Last season, Jones played for the Washington Wizards, averaging 12 points and 7.3 assists with shooting splits of 48.9/41.4/80. He has consistently been one of the league’s best in terms of assist-to-turnover ratio.

Jones may not be the best scorer or defender among point guards and has limitations due to his size and athleticism. However, he excels as a floor general, rarely makes mistakes, puts his teammates in good positions, and doesn’t have many downsides. With the Lakers likely moving on from D’Angelo Russell, Jones could be an affordable and capable replacement.
