NY Giants icon delivers a message to Mets president and owner.

New York Giants legend and football analyst Tiki Barber, though never a baseball player, has insight into how team dynamics can impact an organization. On Friday’s WFAN afternoon show, Barber addressed Mets owner Steve Cohen and president of baseball operations David Stearns, emphasizing the importance of responding to the team’s current position in the playoffs as the July 30 MLB trade deadline approaches.

Barber advised Cohen and Stearns to heed the team’s momentum and the clubhouse’s desire to compete, stating, “The clubhouse is telling you that you have a shot. You better listen. You can’t not listen when your clubhouse is telling you, ‘We want to go for this thing right now.'”

Barber’s comments came after outfielder Brandon Nimmo publicly urged the Mets to be active buyers before the deadline. Despite the Mets’ recent success and improved standings, there are concerns that Cohen might not fully commit to the postseason chase.

The Mets’ recent acquisition of right-handed relief pitcher Phil Maton and the remaining $2.75 million on his contract was seen by some as indicative of a less aggressive approach to trades. With key series against the Miami Marlins, New York Yankees, and Atlanta Braves upcoming, Barber stressed that the team’s performance in these games will significantly influence their trade deadline strategy.

Mets leaders like Francisco Lindor have highlighted the positive atmosphere within the team following earlier season challenges. However, Barber warned that failing to make significant moves could dampen morale and impact their playoff chances.
