Red Sox Connected to Four Hitters as Trade Deadline Approaches

With the 2024 MLB trade deadline just a week away, rumors are intensifying about some of the league’s top players. Teams generally have three options: buy, sell, or hold steady. Despite a four-game losing streak, it appears the Boston Red Sox will attempt to buy, or at least partially, by July 30. While pitching remains the club’s primary need, adding another bat to the lineup would also be beneficial.

**Bo Bichette – SS – Toronto Blue Jays – UFA 2026**

Bo Bichette, ranked as the fourth-best trade candidate by Britton and Gleeman, signed a 3-year, $33.6 million deal in 2023, keeping him under contract until the end of the 2025 season. Despite a strong start to his career with five consecutive years above an .800 OPS, Bichette is struggling in 2024 with a .223 average and .597 OPS in 79 games. His 70 OPS+ is nearly half of his previous career low. Over his first five seasons, Bichette hit .299 with 89 homers, 312 RBI, and a .826 OPS.

**Jazz Chisholm Jr. – CF/2B – Miami Marlins – UFA 2027**

Jazz Chisholm Jr., ranked 16th on The Athletic’s list, has been batting across the Marlins lineup in 2024 and is arbitration-eligible through the 2026 season. Currently, the 26-year-old is batting .246 with 13 homers, 12 doubles, 19 stolen bases, and a .731 OPS. Given Miami’s poor start this season, Chisholm is likely to be among the players they are willing to trade.

**J.D. Martinez – DH – New York Mets – UFA 2025**

J.D. Martinez, a former Red Sox player, is ranked 29th. He spent five years in Boston from 2018-2022, including a World Series win in 2018. After his time with the Red Sox, he joined the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2023 and then the New York Mets in 2024. At age 36, Martinez is still performing well, batting .264 with a .794 OPS, 10 homers, 40 RBI, and 15 doubles, although these numbers are below his 2023 stats where he had a near-.900 OPS, 33 home runs, and 103 RBI.

**Justin Turner – DH/CI – Toronto Blue Jays – UFA 2025**

Justin Turner, another former Red Sox player, is ranked 48th. The 39-year-old played the 2023 season in Boston, hitting .276 with 23 home runs and 96 RBI. He signed a one-year, $13 million deal with the Blue Jays for the 2024 season. However, he has struggled this season, batting just .228 with five homers over 83 games, making it unlikely he will match his previous performance.
