J.J. McCarthy finds himself on the unfortunate side of history.

Just a few days ago, the thought of J.J. McCarthy‘s rookie season being part of history would have thrilled the Minnesota Vikings. But this isn’t the kind of history they wanted. McCarthy is now set to miss his entire rookie season after undergoing surgery for a torn meniscus in his right knee, making him the first first-round quarterback in the common era (since 1967) to miss his debut season due to injury, according to CBS Sports.

Additionally, McCarthy becomes the eighth first-round QB not to play during his rookie year. Among those, five—Jordan Love (2020), Jason Campbell (2005), Carson Palmer (2003), Ken O’Brien (1983), and Steve Pisarkiewicz (1977)—served as backups, while Kelly Stouffer (1987) sat out due to a contract dispute and Jim Kelly (1983) played in the USFL.

McCarthy had shown promise in the preseason, completing 11 of 17 passes for 188 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception in the Vikings’ 24-23 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. Both touchdown passes were deep throws, with a 45-yard score to Trishton Jackson and a 33-yard TD to Trent Sherfield.

Though it was unlikely McCarthy would have started in Week 1, with veteran Sam Darnold leading the way, there was a chance he might have seen some playing time as a rookie.
