Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is reportedly interested in purchasing the Boston Celtics, according to Bill Simmons from *The Ringer*.
The NBA is aiming for a $6 billion sale price, with plans for future expansion.
“They don’t own the arena, so it’s a steep price, but they’ll likely get it,” Simmons commented. “They want $6 billion because they’re eyeing expansion teams in Seattle, Vegas, and possibly Mexico City. Each current NBA owner would receive a $400 million share from this, so they’re using the Celtics’ sale to set the benchmark.”
Irving Grousbeck, father of current Celtics majority owner Wyc Grousbeck, is reportedly pushing for the sale, seeking the highest possible price—a sum Bezos, the world’s second-richest man after Elon Musk, could easily afford.
The Celtics are on track to exceed $200 million in player salaries for each of the next four seasons, making them a luxury-tax team for the foreseeable future.
Jayson Tatum recently signed a five-year contract worth up to $315 million, the largest in NBA history, while Jaylen Brown secured a five-year deal worth up to $303.7 million in 2023.
