NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk/NBC Sports is skeptical about the explanation that quarterback Aaron Rodgers skipped the New York Jets’ two-day mandatory minicamp because he had “a pre-planned trip to Egypt” arranged before the practice dates were set, supposedly for after the offseason programs concluded.
Jets reporter Connor Hughes of SNY has consistently downplayed the significance of Rodgers missing minicamp, noting that the future Hall of Famer participated in most of the team’s voluntary spring workouts. Florio previously mentioned that the Jets intended to fine Rodgers for missing minicamp as an unexcused absence, and Hughes added on Monday that the team “did not want to set a precedent for players missing mandatory workouts for pre-planned trips.”
However, this doesn’t explain why neither Rodgers nor head coach Robert Saleh addressed the 40-year-old’s absence before minicamp started.
Rodgers appears committed to playing for the Jets this season. He is expected to be cleared for contact by Week 1 after suffering a torn Achilles in September 2023 and is anticipated to report on time for training camp later this month.
Saleh told reporters on June 12 that he and Rodgers were “on the exact same page” regarding the absences. Despite this, Rodgers had not publicly echoed Saleh’s comments as of Tuesday afternoon.
