The Los Angeles Lakers will participate in both the California Classic and the Las Vegas Summer League. With JJ Redick, a new head coach without prior head coaching experience, some speculated he might benefit from coaching the Lakers’ Summer League team to gain experience.
Although coaching at the Summer League level could aid Redick’s development, it was uncertain who would take on the role since no staff had been announced. Redick has now named Dane Johnson, coach of the Lakers’ G-League affiliate South Bay Lakers, as the Summer League coach. Redick mentioned he would be actively involved with the team throughout the summer during practices and games.
“Dane Johnson will coach the California Classic and Summer League,” Redick stated at a press conference. “I will be heavily involved in practices and participate in some capacity during the games and film sessions. It’s an excellent development opportunity for Dane and his staff. Meanwhile, I need to focus on various priorities, including building out a staff.”
This is a great chance for Johnson to showcase his abilities and potentially secure a spot on Redick’s staff in the future. Last season, Johnson led the South Bay Lakers to an 18-16 record, although they missed the playoffs. He has already built a rapport with some players on the Lakers’ Summer League roster, including last year’s second-round pick Maxwell Lewis and two-way big man Colin Castleton.
