In June, while Kyle Schwarber made headlines, two Philadelphia Phillies stood out and garnered national acclaim.
Bryce Harper, the Phillies’ first baseman, and Cristopher Sánchez, their starting pitcher, were named the National League Player and Pitcher of the Month, respectively, on Wednesday.
For Harper, it marked his second consecutive month winning the award. He led all NL players in June with a 1.166 OPS, 17 extra-base hits, and a .714 slugging percentage, finishing the month with a .374/.452/.714 slash line, seven home runs, and 16 RBIs. Despite currently nursing a “very mild” hamstring strain on the 10-day injured list, Harper aims to return before the Phillies face the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 9.
Meanwhile, Sánchez, in his breakout season as a full-time starter for the Phillies, had a stellar June. The 27-year-old went 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA and an NL-best 0.82 WHIP across five starts. His ERA tied for the NL lead, and he recorded 23 strikeouts against just four walks. Sánchez capped off the month with 16 scoreless innings in his last two starts, including a three-hit shutout against the Miami Marlins. In 16 starts this season, he boasts a 6-3 record, a 2.41 ERA, and 79 strikeouts in 93 1/3 innings.
Recognizing his performance, the Phillies awarded Sánchez a four-year contract extension last month, securing his services through his arbitration years. He joins Ranger Suárez as the second Phillies starter to earn Pitcher of the Month honors in 2024, with Suárez previously winning for March and April.
