The Los Angeles Lakers have frustratingly remained inactive this offseason, with their only new additions being Dalton Knecht and Bronny James from the NBA Draft. Consequently, these two rookies have garnered significant attention as they strive to secure rotation minutes for the upcoming season during the Summer League.
Following Friday night’s defeat to the Houston Rockets at the Las Vegas Summer League, fans gained more clarity on the team’s plans for the rookies next season. Lakers Summer League and G League affiliate head coach Dane Johnson disclosed that both players will “be in the G League at some point.”
This decision is understandable for Bronny James, who is 19 years old and lacks extensive experience at the highest level, having struggled in the Summer League, particularly with his 0/12 performance from three-point range in three games.
However, the statement is surprising regarding Knecht. As a former Tennessee star, Knecht was considered one of the most NBA-ready prospects in the draft. At 23 years old, he possesses the skills to complement LeBron James and Anthony Davis and has been delivering solid performances in the Summer League.
If Knecht also requires time in the G League, it is not an encouraging sign for the Lakers. This would suggest that he is not yet ready to contribute at the NBA level, raising questions about his future.
The Lakers need affordable, young contributors, making it crucial to get significant contributions from Knecht and James in their rookie seasons. However, Johnson’s comments on Friday night do not bode well for this prospect.
