Analyst Adam “The Bull” Gerstenhaber criticizes the Browns’ decision to extend kicker Dustin Hopkins‘ contract, making him one of the top five highest-paid kickers in the NFL.
In a Twitter clip from “The Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show,” Gerstenhaber questions why the team would pay Hopkins over $5 million per year.
“My first reaction was, why on Earth would you pay a lot of money to a kicker,” Gerstenhaber said.
He described Hopkins as “an average at best kicker before last year,” suggesting that the 33-year-old could be easily replaced without any decline in performance.
Gerstenhaber also mentioned that wide receiver Amari Cooper, who recently held out from Cleveland’s mandatory minicamp, should be upset as other players receive extensions while his contract remains unresolved.
However, Gerstenhaber acknowledged that the Browns are willing to spend up to the salary cap each year, and Hopkins’ expensive extension shouldn’t prevent Cleveland from offering new deals to other players.
