Why Brown is Relieved Kings Contract Extension Was Finalized Before the Season

Mike Brown can now fully focus on Kings basketball for the 2024-25 NBA season after signing a three-year, $30 million contract extension on Wednesday.

Brown had reportedly agreed to the deal over six weeks ago, during a time when there was a “gulf” between him and Sacramento. Now, with negotiations behind him, Brown is pleased to stay with the Kings long-term.

“I’m extremely happy,” Brown told reporters on Wednesday. “My family and I are very happy to be back. We love the people in the city.

“From Day 1, everyone has welcomed us with open arms… the fans, working with Monty [McNair] and Wes [Wilcox], and having Matina [Kolokotronis] and Vivek [Ranadivé] there — just the type of people that are a part of the program — [also,] my coaches, players, and staff.”

Sean Cunningham reported on Twitter about catching up with Kings coach Mike Brown regarding his extension with Sacramento, the addition of DeMar DeRozan, having Malik Monk back, Monk’s role going forward, and the need to replace several coaches on his staff.

Since taking over from Alvin Gentry in 2022, Brown has built a strong rapport with the Kings and the greater Sacramento community. He has been a culture changer, especially after helping the Kings end their 16-year NBA playoff drought during the 2022-23 season. Developing key players like Keegan Murray, retaining talents like Malik Monk, and acquiring marquee players such as DeMar DeRozan in free agency have all contributed to this sentiment.
