Detroit Lions Almost Clear Injury List, Remove 4 Players from NFI

There’s a reason we remind our readers that when a player is placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) or Non-Football Injury (NFI) list, there’s no need to panic. Sometimes these stints last only days. For four Detroit Lions this year, the stint lasted just hours.

On Wednesday morning, the Lions placed Tre’Quan Smith, Donovan Peoples-Jones, Carlton Davis, and Amik Robertson on the NFI list. By the end of the day, all four had passed their physicals and were activated from the list, making them eligible to practice as soon as the team’s second training camp practice on Thursday morning.

After clearing three players from the injury list on Wednesday morning, only one player remains held out from practice: defensive tackle DJ Reader. He is still on the PUP list, as expected, while he continues to rehab from a torn quad suffered late in the 2023 season. Coach Dan Campbell had informed the media in the spring that it would take some time into training camp for Reader to return.

“I would say Reader is probably the one that’s going to take a minute,” Campbell said in June.

So, the Lions will proceed through the first week of training camp with nearly full attendance, just as Campbell predicted over a month ago.
