Timoce Duve, the former Fijian Schoolboys head coach, has been appointed as the permanent head coach of the Kaiviti Silktails for the 2025 season. This announcement marks a new chapter for the team as they transition into a new era, having recently made the decision to become a feeder club for the Canterbury Bulldogs, replacing their previous connection with the Sydney Roosters.
The Silktails, who initially competed in the Ron Massey Cup, have moved into the Jersey Flegg Cup as part of the Pacific Sports strategy, with an eventual goal of seeing the nation represented in the NRL. While this dream of an NRL team is still a long way off, the club has been focused on long-term growth, though their on-field performances have not yet met expectations. Under the leadership of board members like former star forward Petero Civoniceva, the Silktails have consistently emphasized their commitment to long-term development.
Duve had served as the interim head coach following the mid-season resignation of the club’s first coach, Wes Naiqama, in 2024. Duve’s promotion to head coach reflects the trust the club has in his abilities, particularly after his efforts to continue the team’s development amidst difficult circumstances. He will now be supported by an experienced coaching staff, including Rusiate Ratukana, the former Fiji Residents Rugby Sevens strength and conditioning coach and captain, who will return as the assistant coach. Joe Saukuru, a former Bulldogs SG Ball coach, will serve as a technical advisor, acting as the coaching link between the Silktails and the Bulldogs. Saukuru has already begun working with the Bulldogs’ junior setup ahead of the 2024 season. Additionally, Ben Tubakibau returns to the club to assist with recruitment efforts.
Executive director Stephen Driscoll expressed confidence in the new coaching team, highlighting their connection to the Silktails’ values and long-term vision. He acknowledged Duve’s performance as interim coach, noting how he adapted to the head coach role as the season progressed. Civoniceva also praised the return of key personnel, including Ratukana, Saukuru, and Tubakibau, emphasizing the importance of building a strong, experienced coaching staff to support the team’s development. This new coaching structure aims to provide stability and growth, ensuring that the Silktails continue their path toward achieving their long-term goals.
