The Atlanta Braves are in need of bolstering their starting rotation, with the possibility of adding two new pitchers before the 2025 season kicks off. The 2024 season exposed the team’s struggles with pitching depth, largely due to a series of injuries that plagued their staff. Now, with key pitchers like Max Fried and Charlie Morton departing, the Braves are left facing Jack Flaherty gaps in their rotation. According to Austin Owens of FanSided, a potential solution could be free agent pitcher from the Los Angeles Dodgers, who he believes would be a perfect fit for the Braves.
Flaherty is expected to sign a contract worth around $100 million, and reports from Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic indicate that the pitcher is open to considering short-term deals with high average annual values. This could be highly advantageous for Braves’ general manager Alex Anthopoulos, as Owens notes. Adding a proven veteran like Flaherty, who has a track record of success at the Major League level, would significantly help shore up Atlanta’s rotation, especially in light of the losses of Fried and Morton.
Flaherty would complement the Braves’ existing ace, Chris Sale, the reigning Cy Young Award winner, while also potentially providing mentorship to emerging talent like Spencer Schwellenbach. Flaherty, while not a Cy Young contender himself, is widely regarded as a reliable and consistent starter, making him an ideal addition to the Braves’ pitching staff. At a much lower cost than re-signing Fried, who could command a deal in the $200 million range, Flaherty presents an affordable yet effective option.
In addition to Flaherty, the Braves could also look at a more high-risk, high-reward option such as Max Scherzer to further strengthen their pitching lineup. Together, these moves would ensure that the Braves’ pitching staff remains competitive and capable of handling the demands of the 2025 season.
